BURKINA FASO

BURKINA FASO

Background & Program Information

Active Since: 2012

Many Malians fled their homeland to seek refuge in neighboring countries in response to a turbulent period of conflict and human rights violations in the northern region in early 2012. IEDA Relief has provided support and services for over 50,000 Malian refugees since 2012 and in 2015, our services will continue to reach the remaining 30,000 Malian refugees and their host communities. We serve the consolidated camps and the surrounding communities in the Sahel as well as the city of Bobo-Diolasso and rural hors camps (outside camps) areas. Programs are nationally managed at the IEDA Relief country office in Ouagadougou with support from operational offices in Dori, Djibo, and Bobo-Dioulasso.

Activities include refugee settlement, relocation and registration in consolidated camps; building, improving and maintaining camp infrastructure; organizing community celebrations and special events; and maintaining and optimizing the standards of services and operations in the camp. In 2015, IEDA Relief continues to coordinate the activities of 10 humanitarian partners in 2 consolidated camps of Mentao and Goudoubo (following the closure of the Sagnioniogo camp in April 2015), holding monthly coordination meetings with refugee committees and partner representatives to identify gaps and ensure services are provided in an efficient and effective manner.

These programs are intended to reduce protection-related risks and support over 2000 people with specific needs, including pregnant women, the elderly, the disabled, and unaccompanied children. In addition to identifying solutions to address individual needs, IEDA Relief organized awareness campaigns to prevent sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), and facilitated peaceful coexistence between refugees in camps and the surrounding communities by organizing recreational activities and community action days.

IEDA Relief manages monthly food distributions for refugees living in camps, outside camps and in urban settings, working closely with the WFP and UNHCR to enforce fair and transparent distribution standards and procedures. Between January and June 2015, a total of 1,740 tons of rice, oil, beans, salt, and corn/soy mix were distributed across the country, serving 8,267 households for a total of 31,471 individuals. In 2013 and 2014, IEDA Relief and the UNHCR also provided training and financial support for a total of 533 women to carry out income-generating activities (IGAs) that allowed them to provide for their households and move towards self-sufficiency.
